About Us
Our Story
The pub occupies a site rich in maritime history. Originally known as The Appletree, it was once a popular meeting place for sailors and dockyard workers. The area itself played a significant role in Portsmouth's naval heritage, with stories of young men being press-ganged into service and beginning their journey with the Royal Navy.
Rebuilt in 1902 by respected architect A.E. Cogswell, the building remains a local landmark and still retains connections to its past, with historic artefacts displayed throughout the pub.
Today, The Ship & Castle offers a bright, spacious and welcoming environment where history meets modern hospitality. Guests can enjoy freshly prepared food, a renowned Sunday carvery, breakfasts served throughout the week and a range of great value food and drink offers.
